Dental Implant FAQ’s

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a permanent new root for a missing tooth. It is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone. An abutment and crown is then placed on the implant to provide a new tooth that is permanent and looks just like a natural tooth.

How are dental implants different than dentures?

Dentures are a removable set of teeth or partial set of teeth that need to be removed and cared for in a special manner. They can often feel bulky and are difficult to get used to. Dental implants are a permanent replacement for missing teeth that can be cared for just like natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants look and feel like real teeth, they are permanent, you can eat the foods you want without any fear of embarrassment, and the procedure is a highly successful one.  Dental implants help maintain your bone in the missing space as well as any adjacent teeth.  Bone resorbs (shrinks) when there is no tooth or implant due to changes in blood flow to the area.  Placing a dental implant will help maintain the bone you have.

Who can place a dental implant?

Dr. McCune can place your implant(s) as he is a trained implantologist!  We can take care of your implant needs from start to finish!  First we assess the area and your needs.  Then we take a 3D cone beam CT scan of the area to help us in our surgical and restorative planning.  Then we can proceed with placement, with or without bone grafting, or sometimes bone grafting prior to placement.  After the implant integrates with the surrounding bone we can take an impression for your abutment and implant crown.  At the final appointment we place your abutment and implant crown!

How much do implants cost?

The price of your dental implants will vary based on how many implants you are having placed, amount of insurance coverage, and more. Schedule a complimentary consultation with us to learn more about dental implants!

Do dental implants hurt?

No!  A local anesthetic will be given before the procedure so that you do not feel any pain. Typically you will feel vibration at the most!  If you have anxiety or fear we can discuss if conscious sedation is right for you!

How long do implants last?

When cared for properly, implants should last a lifetime. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits are essential to the success of your implant.
